For centuries, the conquistadores had searched the jungle for the glittering kingdom of El Dorado.

Las concepciones equivocadas sobre los "indios"

The notion of a complex civilization in the Amazon contradicted the two ethnological paradigms that had prevailed since the first encounter between Europeans and Native Americans, more than 400 years earlier. Though some of the first conquistadores were in awe of the civilizations that Native Americans had
developed, many theologians debated whether these dark-skinned, scantily clad peoples were, in fact, human; for how could the descendants of Adam and Eve have wandered so far, and how could the biblical prophets have been ignorant of them? In the mid-16th century, Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda, one of the Holy Roman Emperor's chaplains, argued that the Indians were "half men" who should be treated as natural slaves.
At the time, the most forceful critic of this genocidal paradigm was Bartolomé de Las Casas, a Dominican friar who had traveled throughout the Americas. In a famous debate with Sepúlveda and in a series of treatises, Las Casas tried to prove, once and for all, that Indians were equal humans ("Are these not men? Do they not have rational souls?"), and to condemn those "pretending to be Christians" who "wiped them from the face of the earth." In the process, however, he contributed to a conception of the Indians that became an equal staple of European ethnology: the "noble" savage. According to Las Casas, the Indians were "the simplest people in the world," "without malice or guile," who are "totally uninterested in worldly
power."

Biological determinism had increasingly given way to environmental determinism. And the Amazon - the great "counterfeit paradise," as the archeologist Betty Meggers famously coined it - was the most vivid proof of the Malthusian limits that the environment placed on civilizations.

El Dorado si existió

Using aerial photography and satellite imaging, scientists have also begun to find enormous man-made earth mounds and causeways across the Amazon - in particular in the Bolivian flood plains where Fawcett first found his shards of pottery. Clark Erickson, an anthropologist from the University of Pennsylvania who has studied these earthworks in Bolivia, says that the mounds allowed the Indians to continue farming during seasonal floods. To create them, he said, required extraordinary labor and engineering: tons of soil had to be transported, the course of rivers altered, canals excavated, and interconnecting roadways and settlements built. In many ways, he said, the mounds "rival the Egyptian pyramids."Some scientists now believe the rain forest may have sustained millions of people. And for the first time scholars are reevaluating the El Dorado chronicles that Fawcett used to piece together his theory of Z. Though no one has found evidence of the fantastical gold that the conquistadores had dreamed of, the anthropologist Neil Whitehead said, "With some caveats, El Dorado really did exist."

Articulo completo aqui.

Much High Fructose Corn Syrup Contaminated With Mercury, New Study Finds Brand-Name Food Products Also Discovered to Contain Mercury

Minneapolis - Mercury was found in nearly 50 percent of tested samplesof commercial high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), according to a newarticle published today in the scientific journal, EnvironmentalHealth. A separate study by the Institute for Agriculture and TradePolicy (IATP) detected mercury in nearly one-third of 55 popularbrandname food and beverage products where HFCS is the first or secondhighest labeled ingredient-including products by Quaker, Hershey's,Kraft and Smucker's. HFCS use has skyrocketed in recent decades as thesweetener has replaced sugar in many processed foods."Just published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal, EnvironmentalHealth, is the bombshell that commercial HFCS appears to be routinelycontaminated with mercury. It turns out the contamination isn't somuch accidental as newly recognized, given the fact that much HFCS hasbeen made and continues to be made using 'mercury-grade' causticsoda."HFCS is found in sweetened beverages, breads, cereals, breakfast bars, lunch meats, yogurts, soups and condiments. On average, Americansconsume about 12 teaspoons per day of HFCS. Consumption by teenagersand other high consumers can be up to 80 percent above average levels."While the FDA had evidence that commercial HFCS was contaminated withmercury four years ago, the agency did not inform consumers, helpchange industry practice or conduct additional testing." "Mercury istoxic in all its forms," said IATP's David Wallinga, M.D., and aco-author in both studies. "Given how much high fructose corn syrup isconsumed by children, it could be a significant additional source ofmercury never before considered.(from the US Autism and Asperger Association)

Food Insecurity

http://www.grain.org/briefings_files/landgrab-2008-en.pdf

y los paises involucrados
http://www.grain.org/briefings_files/landgrab-2008-en-annex.pdf

They are due to arrive this month. The Ashaninka are scared, angry and fiercely defensive and they think I represent Pluspetrol because I am white.

The village HF radio network that we had used to our advantage the week before to send news of our arrival was being used to pass the message that Pluspetrol has come and not to let them through. They are coming indeed - but its not me
(...)
A man I told about this last night said that the Nativos in that part are “bad” and stand in the way of progression for Peru. He is repeating verbatim the propaganda that is being pumped into Peruvians by President Garcia. The TV ads say “Peru Advances” with shiney happy people extracting oil and other natural resources. Peru’s economy
is indeed advancing - the fastest in South America this last year - but at what cost?

100% of the Peruvian Amazon (outside of the few protected areas)
is now allocated for resource extraction of some kind. 100%. Here “conservation” is a dirty word and stands in the way of progress. The map below from 2007 shows the areas already contracted out for oil extraction in green, the lots under negotiation in orange and yellow are areas still up for grabs…

Ecuador will hold the world's first constitutional referendum in which voters will decide, among many other reforms, whether to endow nature with certain inalienable rights. Not only would the new constitution give nature the right to "exist, persist, maintain and regenerate its vital cycles, structure, functions and its processes in evolution," but if it is approved, communities, elected officials and even individuals would have legal standing to defend the rights of nature. LA Times

Article 1 of the new “Rights for Nature” chapter of the Ecuador constitution reads: “Nature or Pachamama, where life is reproduced and exists, has the right to exist, persist, maintain and regenerate its vital cycles, structure, functions and its processes in evolution.

Asesinan a Lider Comunitario

Justice!

BALI (INDONESIA), 14 December 2007 – Peoples from social organizations and movements from across the globe brought the fight for social, ecological and gender justice into the negotiating rooms and onto the streets during the UN climate summit in Bali. [1]

Inside and outside the convention centre, activists demanded alternative policies and practices that protect livelihoods and the environment.

In dozens of side events, reports, impromptu protests and press conferences, the false solutions to climate change – such as carbon offsetting, carbon trading for forests, agrofuels, trade liberalization and privatization pushed by governments, financial institutions and multinational corporations – have been exposed.

Affected communities, Indigenous Peoples, women and peasant farmers called for real solutions to the climate crisis, solutions which have failed to capture the attention of political leaders. These genuine solutions include:

reduced consumption.
huge financial transfers from North to South based on historical responsibility and ecological debt for adaptation and mitigation costs paid for by redirecting military budgets, innovative taxes and debt cancellation.
leaving fossil fuels in the ground and investing in appropriate energy-efficiency and safe, clean and community-led renewable energy.
rights based resource conservation that enforces Indigenous land rights and promotes peoples’ sovereignty over energy, forests, land and water.
sustainable family farming and peoples’ food sovereignty.

Inside the negotiations, the rich industrialized countries have put unjustifiable pressure on Southern governments to commit to emissions’ reductions. At the same time, they have refused to live up to their own legal and moral obligations to radically cut emissions and support developing countries’ efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to climate impacts. Once again, the majority world is being forced to pay for the excesses of the minority.

Compared to the outcomes of the official negotiations, the major success of Bali is the momentum that has been built towards creating a diverse, global movement for climate justice.

We will take our struggle forward not just in the talks, but on the ground and in the streets – Climate Justice Now!

Notes
[1] Many social movements and groups that came together in Bali have agreed to establish a coalition called Climate Justice Now! in order to enhance exchange of information and cooperation among themselves and with other groups with the aim of intensifying actions to prevent and respond to climate change. Justice must be at the heart of tackling climate change, and must in no way be sacrificed.

Members of this coalition include: Carbon Trade Watch, Transnational Institute; Center for Environmental Concerns; Focus on the Global South; Freedom from Debt Coalition, Philippines; Friends of the Earth International; Gendercc – Women for Climate Justice, Global Forest Coalition; Global Justice Ecology Project; International Forum on Globalization; Kalikasan-Peoples Network for the Environment (Kalikasan-PNE); La Via Campesina; Members of the Durban Group for Climate Justice; Oilwatch; Pacific Indigenous Peoples Environment Coalition, Aotearoa/New Zealand; Sustainable Energy and Economy Network; The Indigenous Environmental Network; Third World Network; WALHI/ Friends of the Earth Indonesia; World Rainforest Movement

International press contacts:
Walden Bello, Focus on the Global South.

<img width='1' height='1' UNFPA.

Community Conserved Areas

Dear colleagues,
> As you know, Community Conserved Areas (CCAs) are> natural sites, resources and species’ habitats> conserved in a voluntary and self-directed way by> indigenous peoples and local communities throughout> the world. This conservation practice, profoundly> intertwined with local strategies for livelihoods> and with the spiritual and material values of local> cultures, is the oldest on earth. Paradoxically, it> is also the least understood and recognised, and it> is in extreme jeopardy today. Through the last> couple of centuries, conservation has come to be> considered the nearly exclusive domain of> professional experts, state agencies and dedicated> non-governmental organisations and companies.> Indigenous peoples and local communities have been> asked (in the best of cases) to participate in> activities conceived and directed by others. Rarely,> if ever, they have been assisted to strengthen their> own unique knowledge, skills and institutions and to> apply them to natural resource management and> conservation. On the contrary, their local> knowledge, skills and institutions have been> systematically neglected when not actively> undermined.> The World Parks Congress of 2003, the Programme of> Work on Protected Areas of the Convention on> Biological Diversity (CBD) of 2004 and First> Congress on Marine Protected Areas of 2005 marked a> broad reassessment of the situation described above.> Community Conserved Areas have been re-discovered as> one of the few remaining avenues to strengthen the> edifice of sustainable natural resource use and> conservation, crumbling under the imperatives of> market-based development. These undoubtedly> important advances in international conservation> policy are rarely fully reflected, however, in> national policies or practices, and much basic> knowledge on CCAs is still to be gathered and> analysed.> Having played a substantive role in promoting the> broad conservation policy reassessment mentioned> above, TILCEPA> http://www.iucn.org/themes/ceesp/Wkg_grp/TILCEPA/TILCEPA.htm,> TGER http://www.iucn.org/themes/ceesp/TGER.html and> TSL> http://www.iucn.org/themes/ceesp/Wkg_grp/SL/SL.htm> have joined forces with SwedBio> http://www.swedbio.com/about.htm and SSNC> http://www.snf.se/english.cfm to develop and support> a new CCA initiative . The ten hottest years on record have all occurred since 1990. (National Climatic Data Center)

*In Aspen, winter starts 18 days later and ends 10 days earlier than it did fifty years ago. (City of Aspen Canary Institute)

*In New England, the average winter temperature has increased 4.4 degrees F over the last 30 years, and the snow season has decreased more than 15 days. (Union of Concerned Scientists, New Hampshire)

*In Utah's ski areas, temperatures are projected to rise 6 to 15 degrees F by the end of the century. This could mean no snow whatsoever on Park City's mountains (Stratus Consulting, 2007)

*In the Alps, warming has been about three times the global average and is threatening alpine ski resorts and local economies. (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development)

*Several World Cup races scheduled for November 2006 in Europe had to be cancelled because the weather was too warm for snow making (New York Times, November 2006)

*In Canada, not one of Toronto's natural ponds opened last winter for ice skating. As winter temperatures continue to rise, skating on natural ice may be a thing of the past. (Toronto Star, November, 2006)

*Global warming threatens the world's ski resorts, with melting at lower altitudes forcing the sport to move higher and higher up mountains. Downhill skiing could disappear altogether at some resorts as soon as 2030. (United Nations Environment Program report, December 2002)

*Global warming threatens future Winter Olympic Games. The most dramatic consequence of global warming to date is evident in the alpine regions of the world, where the best snows are often found near glaciers. Glaciers are melting at an alarming rate all over the world, and climate scientists estimate that half of the alpine glaciers could disappear in the next 100 years.

Coexistence and Exclusion Between Humans and Monkeys in Japan: Is Either Really Possible?David S. Sprague and Nobusuke Iwasaki

Abstract: The Japanese people face a cultural and ecological challenge in seeking a new relationship between themselves and the Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). Monkeys are a major agricultural pest. Monkey habitat often lies within a short distance from fields and villages, and vice versa, especially in mountainous areas. The idealized solution is a form of coexistence where humans and monkeys somehow negotiate a harmonious compromise. A word used often in Japanese is kyosei, to live in common, implying a more intimate relation than mere side-by-side coexistence. In practice, kyosei is a word used by policy makers or scholars, but less often used by primatologists and agricultural officials. Primatologists aid agricultural extension programs that encourage farmers to implement practical measures to reduce the attractiveness of farmland and villages as feeding sites to monkeys. However, agricultural extension programs may be operationalizing kyosei by encouraging rural communities to reformulate their relationship with monkeys.

Link al JOurnal de Ecological and Environmental Anthropology

Payment for environmental services
